The bloghead is taking a day off today... so in honor of Click and Clack... the Tappit brothers... we bring you an historical piece..... This was our first post ever on the ar(C)omuunity blogsite.... We have come so far....thousands of hits (Thank You!), tons of wonderful feedback and a whole new feel to our Arc Shop Family. We couldn't do all this without you... We know that many of you have made a personal commitment to buying local and supporting locally owned Berkshire businesses.... You are the same people making this blog the success that it is.
and love of the outdoors shared with friends.
It's about rushing whitewater afternoons
and placid evenings on a lake.
It's about the mesmerizing whir of chains and cogs
paired with the pounding bass of a well tuned heart.
It's the smell of conifers in the Berkshires
and the laughter of new found friends.
It's the crunch of snow under treaded feet
and the expectant silence of a forest gone dormant.
It's laughing at mistakes while striving for performance.
It's embracing the world and its people with passion.
This is the Arcadian Shop.
This is our community.
This is our blog.
The State has ordered the Stockbridge Boat Launch open and the Town of Stockbridge has complied. Private boats can now use the lake.
However, we ask the people who utilize Stockbridge Bowl to carefully inspect their boats and follow proper sanitation procedures in order to minimize the chance of infestation. While we recognize that infestation can occur through other means such as waterfowl, etc. we think that an environmentally sensitive approach is warranted.
We will update you regarding boat procedures, if any, for the Josh Billings Race as we receive the info. You can also check http://www.joshbillings.com/ for more immediate updates.
BTW... did you receive the Sale flyer with our new models? Come meet them in person! They will be more than happy to autograph your sale flyer.... Meet them now.... before they are famous!
Another Tour in the books....
The Shop staff will always remember how Contador looked to his left, looked to his right and then did everything but announce his attack with a neon sign. No one had enough juice to go with him. It was a brutal acceleration.... he just danced away..... while the cafe in the Shop was silent....
We will always remember how jubilant Cavendish was when he won the final sprint of the Tour.....
Write in with your favorite memories and we'll post them up later in the week.....
NPR http://www.wamc.org/ is the constant companion of the Arc Bloghead on the commute to Lenox. (Shout out to Alan.... thanks for all you do!) There was a very thoughtful piece this morning on the "fast fooding" of communication in America. The commentator observed that we have, especially in social networking sites, reduced language to abbreviations and superficial exchanges. He posits that the result is a "speeding up" of language that robs language of its contemplative and artistic dimensions. He lamented the fact that "slow language" such as poetry and dense prose is slowly losing ground.... But he also believes that a desire for the "slow" is growing in our culture....
This is reflected in our experience of this summer at the Arc Shop. We have many more people coming through our doors desiring backpacks and birding guides... They look a little harried, a bit stressed and overstimulated. They are voicing to us a deep want of quiet and solitude.... a salving experience of the wilderness.
Maybe this is the gift of this recession.
Maybe we have all become a little to superficial in our wants. Maybe the desire for contemplative silence, whether it be with a backpack, in a kayak, on a bike or in a canoe is an expression of our own inner poverty. Maybe this silence is something we need. Something we crave.
We see it in the eyes of our clients as they leave with a rental kayak. When they return... they have been transformed.
Allow the outdoor experience to transform you.....
From Jinnet over at spookylibrarians HQ comes a collage of photos dedicated to the ghosts of Tours past....http://www.flickr.com/photos/nationaalarchief/sets/72157620769456464
Although not an outdoor site.... I love this one for its ease of use and consistent good deals... http://www.kayak.com/
It's not quite time... but we place this little clip into your semiconscious in order to remind you that winter happens.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjjZoU_05P8
If that previous vid. got the juices flowing... how about a little Tele Freeride.....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhxM9OA3IxM&feature=related
The JiFFL this week will blow your mind.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yH4MbnRYQOQ
Mussels..... no not the flexing kind..... the invasive kind....
It seems that a solution to the Lake Mah Kee Nac access challenge is close to being resolved. Our "reporter in the know" tells us that a certification process will be available for boats as soon as the stickers arrive. (We are projecting late next week.... but like stock market projections..... they are never to be counted upon...)
We are still amped up after yesterday's stage.... so we offer you a top ten list of things to do while watching the Tour...... or enjoying the rest day.....
Dream about a new bike!!!
Did you watch the Stage today??? Amazing isn't it???
It seems that the leadership of the team has been cemented. These are the stages that inspire us all.
The cafe was packed full of people watching the end of the stage when we opened. When Contador went off the front an audible gasp burst forth from the throats of people present. Every cup of coffee held aloft was tabled in astonishment. Nearly a full minute passes before anyone spoke.
I love watching the Tour while in the Shop......
Feel free to join us!!!
